Geek Moment! Starring Robert Scoble & Demi Moore!
Sep 9th, 2008 by Fred Davis
It was a true geek moment, folks. I was at the VIP party at TechCrunch 50 today with Robert Scoble, my old buddy, who I am doing a deal with over at FastCompany.TV. As expected, there was a big swarm of people around Ashton Kutcher, whose visit was a much publicized tie-in to the announcement of his new web startup, BlahGirls.com, a cool-looking site with three cartoon girls who gossip about the latest entertainment news. Kind of a twisted, funny, cartoon ET… a very promising premise considering Ashton’s well-known sense of humor. Sweet!

Ashton was surprisingly tech savvy, keeping up the buzzword-laden banter with some of the biggest geeks around. And he’s definitely got the entrepreneurial bug, which came out loud and clear when he mentioned that he had one of those ah-ha moments a while ago when he realized that that equity in start-ups is potentially WAY more valuable than residuals from TV shows. Sweet!
Anyway, I was surprised how few people were paying attention to his lovely wife, the amazing Demi Moore. So, I struck up a conversation, and was delighted to find that she was very unassuming and approachable… she definitely seemed like a real person, and not a Hollywood snob. Pretty refreshing. She gushed about her hubby’s site (really sweet!), and also talked about a new short video she will be premiering on the web on October 14th. It was also entertaining to hear her explain to some of the brass from Facebook about the problems she’s had with it (hint: there are a lot of Demi Moore’s on Facebook… none of them are her).
But the capper was when Scoble walked up, and I had to gush out an intro, telling her how Scoble was a huge tech star…
mega-blogger… etc… and as an example I mentioned that if you search Google for “Robert” he comes up on the top of the list… ahead of many supposedly better-known Robert’s in the world. Demi seemed impressed by that. Scoble kind of said, aw shucks, and wandered off. Man, that was humble, I thought.
A little later I ran back into Scoble, and he said, “Hey Fred, who was that woman?” My jaw just about fell on the floor. “Uh, that was Demi Moore, dude.” Scoble then proceeded to freak, and couldn’t believe he didn’t recognize her or realize who he was being introduced to. Now, that is a true geek moment. Robert, I love you, man, but you are definitely Geek of the Week this week!
Yawza Fred! I’m glad you still have your priorities strait. Plenty of time for nerds and nerd stuff it will still be there tomorrow if it is important but Demi shall I same Moore.
[...] “Just how isolated are tech pundits like Robert Scoble from the real world? In a telling moment at a “VIP” party for TechCrunch50, Michael Arrington’s startup conference taking place this week in San Francisco, an attendee tried to explain Scoble’s notoriety to fading film star Demi Moore.” [...]
LOL. Nice. Sounds like a great party, and a classic moment.
Fred, it’s good to see you’re still out on the prowl. I love that Demi was impressed with Robert and he didn’t know who she was… She may be fading a little as a film star, but she still lights up a room.
Fred, good to see you mixing it up with the elementals! Where you been, brah? Coming back to the ‘Brook soon?
Hey Fred! good to see you doing what you do best! Loved all this tech gossip!
